NY columnist to discuss Tulsa

FROM NICOLE NASCENZI
World Staff Writer

The `view of a knowledgeable outsider' can be valuable.

A New York Times columnist is coming to Tulsa next week to talk about this city's future.
Joel Kotkin, author of "The New Geography" and a Milken Institute senior fellow, wrote and researched several studies that included Tulsa.
A study of technology cities released in 2001 described Tulsa as an emerging tech center but said it may never become a top- tier player in the market.
The report, "Knowledge-Value Cities in the Digital Age," was conducted by the Milken Institute, a Los Angeles-based think tank.
Skilled tech workers are mov ing to cities they deem desirable, the researchers stated, and the trend is reshaping America. Some cities, such as Tulsa, are drawing companies away from the high-cost coasts.
"Companies that are watching costs in the slowing economy are left with fewer choices," Kotkin said. "Places such as
Silicon Valley and Austin, Texas, are getting too expensive."
Kotkin wrote an article about Tulsa in the July 16, 2000, issue of the New York Times.
During his 48 hours in T-town, he plans to meet with business leaders, speak to a Tulsa Rotary Club luncheon and address another group of Tulsans.
R. Brent Johnson, president of Tulsa-based SecureAgent.com, is one of the sponsors bringing Kotkin to Tulsa. He said he hopes the columnist helps the city find its direction.
"I think in all cases, people need to have the view of a knowledgeable outsider to tell them what other people are doing," Johnson said.
Kotkin serves as a consultant for metropolitan areas across the country and can offer invaluable perspective, Johnson said. Kotkin's presentation, "Strategies for Reshaping Tulsa," will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Oklahoma State University- Tulsa auditorium.
